Here are a few tips from Mister Sparky for Fire Safety Month

Check for Frayed Wires

Frayed wires can be an electrical hazard in your home, and you should check your appliances and extension cords for fraying damage. Remember to unplug cords from the wall before you start, then carefully examine the cords for any signs of exposed wire.

Annual Panel Inspection

Having an annual system inspection can help make sure your electrical system is in top running condition. Common issues we see are loose outlets (plugging into the outlet and it’s loose or drops out), tripping breakers, flickering lights, and warm to the touch outlets.

Check Smoke Alarms

Put a reminder on your calendar to test your smoke alarms at least once a month to make sure they operate correctly by pressing the test button. If you hear chirping at any time don’t wait to replace the battery, do it immediately. Otherwise, it is recommended you change out the batteries on an annual basis. Don’t forget to check the date on the smoke detector, if it is older than 10 years, the device needs to be replaced. We recommend a multiple-sensing alarm, which includes smoke and carbon monoxide combined, for an additional safety measure.

Plan an Escape Route

According to the National Fire Protection Association survey, only one of every three American households have developed and practiced a fire escape plan.

Make a home escape plan.

Know at least two ways out of every room and all doors and windows are easy to open.
Have an outside meeting place a safe distance away from the home.
If there is a fire, close the doors behind you to slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
