Most individuals rely entirely on the electrical grid, which can make things pretty hairy when the power goes out. Thankfully, battery operated devices and generators can help us maintain our day-to-day lifestyle without dependency on the licensed electrician. Still, with massive storms, a few batteries might not cut it. Before you end up cowering in a corner with a flashlight, perhaps babbling incoherently, here are a few things you might want to try to stay occupied during a power outage:

Get Active
Get outside and ride a bike, take a walk, or try some jumping jacks. Your body, and sanity, will thank you. Just be careful to not hurt yourself in the dark.

Take a Nap
The outage might be the universe’s way of telling you to power down. Plus, the lights are already out, so no need to flip a switch.

Play Cards
When was the last time you broke out a deck of real cards? If you’re alone, solitaire is the obvious choice, but you can also try some simple group card games such as war to keep your mind off the lack of electricity. UNO is another easy-to-play game that appeals to all ages.

Socialize
If the landlines still work, pick up the phone and have an actual conversation with a friend or family member. If you’re lucky enough to have loved ones close by, make an impromptu visit.

Read a Book
No, we do not want you to waste the battery life of your tablet. Find a nice paperback and a candle and entertain your brain the old fashioned way.

Eat
Unfortunately, the food in your fridge will start to go bad as a power outage extends from a few hours to a few days. Eat whatever food you can now, and throw the rest out before it starts to smell.

Write a Letter
If the lack of electronics has got you feeling very nostalgic, you can go full-fledged old school and write a letter. Just make sure you have an envelope, stamp, and the recipient’s address so your finely crafted message will not go unread.

Go on a Trip
Even if a power outage occurs at a very inopportune time, you can make the most of it by packing your bags and visiting a new state or town, which hopefully has power. If you’re the outdoorsy type, this is a great time to go camping.
