There is nothing worse than suddenly losing power in your home. While it may be a pain, most homeowners can fix the problem quickly and effectively by themselves. All you need is a little basic knowledge of what’s happening to your circuit breaker and what steps to take.

Why Did My Circuit Breaker Trip?

It can be a little unsettling when your circuit breaker trips. However, it is generally nothing to worry about. The primary reason for a circuit breaker to trip is having too many electric plugs into the same circuit. This is common in homes with older electrical work.

After you have reset your breaker, try unplugging or turning off some of your electronics off. This should prevent your breaker from tripping again.

How to Reset Your Breaker

Resetting your breaker is a very simple task that almost every homeowner can do. All you need to do is follow these steps:

  1. Find Your Electrical Service Panel. The electrical panel is usually a gray or beige box, either in or on a wall of your home. It contains all of the electrical fuses for each circuit in your home. If you’re not sure where it is, they are usually in the basement or garage. However, they may also be in the same room as the furnace or in a hallway.
  2. Located the Tripped Breaker. All of your breakers have an “on” and “off” position. The tripped breaker will either be in the “off” position or halfway between “on” and “off.”
  3. Reset the Breaker. If your breaker is in the “off” position, simply move the switch to the “on” position and you’re done! However, if it is halfway between “on” and “off”, you may need to move it all the way over to off before you can switch it back on.
