Lounging around the pool, soaking in the sun, taking a dip when it gets really hot – that’s what summer is all about. Swimming pools are some of the best ways to beat the heat, but to fully enjoy them, it’s important that you follow the necessary rules to ensure you and your family’s electrical safety.

We all know that we need to keep electrical systems and appliances away from water. But there are other important things to keep in mind when it comes to optimizing your safety by pool.

Putting in a pool, hot tub, or spa? Using an experienced electrician to perform installation will make sure all safety requirements have been fulfilled. Make sure your pool is installed at a safe distance from overhead powerlines.

Due for an upgrade? Make sure your pool or spa is up to code and has passed all necessary inspections.

Keep it covered! All outdoor receptacles (like boxes and outlets) should be kept covered and dry, even when in use.

Use GFCIs. Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFIS) help protect against electric shock.

Keep electrical appliances and equipment at least 6 feet away from water. If possible, use battery-powered items (like radios or even TVs).

NEVER touch electrical devices when wet.

NEVER swim during a thunderstorm.
