We understand, especially when it comes to renovations around the home, that doing projects yourself is fun and rewarding. Unfortunately, many times the outcomes of DIY projects range from inconvenient outlet placement to inadvertent noncompliance with local and national codes dictated by the National Electrical Code (NEC). In order to avoid these issues, we have compiled a list of things to keep in mind when renovating your home.

1) Insufficient Lighting

Make sure to place extra lighting fixtures in the home to have more control of light in the home.

2) Insufficient Outlets

Insert more outlets or consider wall outlets that come with USB ports to make room for larger appliances that need to go directly into an outlet.

3) Not using GFCI Receptacles in Bathrooms

According to the NEC, a bathroom must have a receptacle within three feet of the outside edge of the sink basin. Face-up receptacles on countertops are also not allowed.

4) Misplaced Outlets in General Rooms

Receptacles can only be placed on wall spaces that are more than 24 inches wide. You must also follow the rule of one wall receptacle for every 12 feet. Hallways should have at least one receptacle if they are more than 10 feet in length.

5) Kitchens

Countertops that are 12 inches or wider should have above receptacles. Similar to the bathroom, face-up receptacles are extremely hazardous in a kitchen.
