While we are busy cozying up to our electric fireplaces this winter, take the time to practice these safety tips to avoid dangerous hazards. The list was compiled from various electric manufactures’ safety manuals.

  • Avoid touching hot surfaces on the fireplace while the unit is on. When the fireplace is in operation, the trim surrounding the heater can also get hot.
  • Keep all combustible materials such as furniture, clothes, bedding and curtains at least three feet away from the heater.
  • Keep the unit’s air vents free of dust or debris. Air should move freely in and out of the unit to keep it working properly.
  • Do not leave the unit unattended when there are children, elderly or disabled persons present.
  • If your fireplace has been stored during summer months, always ensure the cords and plugs are not frayed or damaged.
  • Unless otherwise specified, never use your unit outdoors.
  • Never install your fire near a hot tub or pool where it can come in contact with water accidentally.
  • Do not run the unit’s cord or plug under a rug or other furniture.
  • Never operate the unit in areas where flammable liquids, gasoline or paints are being stored or used.
  • Extension cords or power strips are not recommended. Plug the heater directly into a wall or outlet.
