Surge Protection During Uncertain Times
October 26, 2022
Amidst the current global pandemic, the last thing we want to happen is for your power to go out. Texas summers are notorious for electrical storms and the only way to combat their damage is preparation. We want to help educate you on your wire system and reassure you that you can contact Mister Sparky for any questions or repairs.
What Is a Breaker?
A breaker is the main distribution point for electrical circuits. Your home has several breakers that serve as the connection between the external and internal wires in your home’s electrical system. A breaker, or “fuse”, is intended to trip before the circuit wires heat up to dangerous temperatures. When a surge occurs, the powered sources you are using will turn off automatically.
What Causes a Power Outage?
An excessive number of appliances in your home is NOT the cause of a power outage. If your wires are too small for the amount of electricity traveling throughout your home, a power surge will occur.
Why Is My Circuit Breaker Unreliable?
If you noticed that your circuit breaker trips during electrical storms, the underlying issue could be your home’s wiring. Contact us today to have a Mister Sparky employee verify that your home’s system is up to date. Upon inspection, we can suggest any changes that will prevent an electrical surge far before a storm hits.
Now that you are aware of your breaker’s capabilities, here are a few tips to stay safe when these electrical storms hit during the summer:
- Keep all electronics away from water and do not touch anything electrical if your hands are wet. Electricity travels faster in water.
- Ensure that GFCI outlets are installed in every “wet” area of your home. This includes bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, and areas around your pool. GFCI outlets will prevent shocks in your home.
- ALL electrical appliances should be plugged into grounded outlets ONLY. Appliances plugged into extension cords have a higher chance of failing during electrical storms.
As always, if you are concerned about your home’s safety, Mister Sparky is one call away. We urge you to leave electrical repairs to the professionals and we are more than happy to help!
