What Type of USB Charging Outlet Do You Need?

USB charging outlets are becoming commonplace in our homes, where we can plug in our appliances AND charge our devices at the same outlet. For several years now, wall outlets, and even power strips, have been equipped with charging ports compatible with any computer, tablet or mobile device. This is handy since every device usually comes with a different bulky adapter and USB wire, creating clutter on valuable real estate like counters and nightstands!
If you’re looking to upgrade those old receptacles with USB enabled outlets, here are a few things you should know:
What are the different types of ports?
- USB A Port -- USB A is the standard rectangular-shaped USB outlet that everyone is familiar with, and is found in older computers, keyboards, and phone charging blocks.
- USB B Port -- USB B is a square shaped charging port than A.
- USB Micro Port -- This is the standard rectangular shape micro port often found in digital cameras and cell phones.
- USB C Port -- Type C USB’s are a new standard for electronic charging ports. This type of charging port is rounded on the edges, and about the size of a micro USB connector. Type C chargers will deliver the maximum power available to reduce the time the device is plugged in.
Of course, not all outlets will have all of these ports, but many are coming standard with both a type A and a type C.
How to make it work:
Installment may be tricky at first. You will need to make sure you have enough space and depth for the installation of your new junction box. A junction box is an enclosure that protects a connection (i.e., the junction) of two or more wires carrying electrical current. If the space does not suffice, you may need to replace your junction box all together. You may also need to figure out your home's amperage time.
Amperage affects the amount of time needed to charge your devices. Electrical systems in newer homes can charge your devices fairly quickly, while older systems may take a longer amount of time. Amperage is also affected by the amount of devices you have plugged into an outlet at the same time.
