Did you know Florida is called the lightning capital of the United States, but not the world? An African country, Rwanda, holds the lightning capital of the world title with 2.5 times more lightning strikes than Florida.
Here are a few more lightning facts you may not know:
- If you can hear thunder, lightning is nearby. Use the 30/30 rule – if you see lightning, count the seconds till you hear thunder. If it’s less than 30 seconds the storm is within 6 miles and you should stay inside until you haven’t heard thunder for 30 mins.
- According to Weather.com, you are safe in a car from a lightning strike because of the metal frame, not the rubber tires.
- Avoid plumbing and water, electricity from the lightning could travel through the metal or plastic pipes and in the water.
- Never seek shelter under a tree or something tall, you are more likely to be struck by lightning.
Protecting your home from lightning:
- Unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges.
- Use a surge protector to help protect your devices from power surges.
- Install a whole-home surge protector, which is installed at the panel and helps protects your entire electrical system from damage.
