The standard residential electrical outlet is comprised of two three pronged polarized receptacles, each have a 120 volt “hot” wire, a neutral wire, and a ground. In the case where more voltage is required, such as a clothes dryer, there will typically be one receptacle creating 240-volt circuit where 2 of the prongs are “hot” wires and the third is a neutral.
